TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Australia made it to the Asian Cup final, after defeating United Arab Emirates 2-0 in the semifinal.
The Socceroos, playing in Newcastle Stadium on Tuesday, January 27, took an early lead with defender Trent Sainsbury’s superb header three minutes in the first half. Sainsbury companion in the back four, Jason Davidson, later doubled the lead only minutes after.
The final round is the second consecutive final for Australia in their third Asian Cup participation. Australia’s first final was in 2011, when they lost against Japan by a goal.
In this year’s final, Australia will take on South Korea, notably having not conceded a single goal in the competition as it is held in the Down Under. The Taeguk Warrior are also the only team who have defeated host nation Australia in the group stage. Nonetheless, Australia will have major advantage in the final, as none of the players are injured or suspended and that they will be playing before home fans in ANZ stadium, Sydney.
