TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Jakarta Police through its Traffic Management Center (TMC) announced via Twitter they are barring motorists from installing bright, blinding lights on their vehicles.
“Blinding vehicle lamps are subject to a fine of Rp500,000 or two months in jail,” @TMCPoldaMetro tweeted on Wednesday, January 28, 2015. The sanction was pronounced in Article 279 of Law No 22/2009 on Traffic and Public Transportation.
The police also disseminated similar warnings on its website tmcpoldametro.net on December 1, 2014, saying they would take stern action against both car drivers and motorcyclists who changed their headlamps with those radiating bright, white light or LED.
The police said such lights were annoying other drivers, and thus triggering accidents.
TMC said carmakers had installed the lights on their vehicles according to their functionality: headlamps are covered in translucent mica materials that enable the lights to illuminate the road ahead of the drivers, while dimmer lights are used for tail lamps that are wrapped in red mica materials to signal braking.
