Jakarta to Build 10 Water Pump Systems to Anticipate Flood

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Jakarta Waterworks Service Agus Priyono says in order to anticipate flood in the capital city, his agency plans to develop 10 water pump systems, as it becomes one of the biggest programs to handle flood in 2015 to 2035.
“To solve flood in all areas of Jakarta, we must handle it starting from upstream to downstream,” Agus told media during a press release in the Department of Public Works on Monday, Jan. 26.
Three waterpump systems will be built in the west flow, four in the center flow and three in the east flow.
Flood is an annual disaster that always hit the capital city. Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) even enlisted the flood anticipation program as one of his priority plans.
For the center flow, Agus says, waterpump systems will be built in Karang with the pump ability of 60-meters-cube per second, Hailai-Marina with 110-meters-cube per second, Krukut River 6-meters-cube per secodand Mampang River 60-meters-cube per second.
For the east flow, the agency will built the waterpump system in Sentiong Ancol, Sunter Kresek and Cakung Drain. The development of these 10 waterpumps require a budget of Rp 11.9 trillion. “Hopefully in 2035, Jakarta will be free from flood,” Agus said.
