TEMPO.CO, Dodoma - Tanzanian albinos are being hunted down like animals, in a recent report unveiled by the Daily Mail. Tanzanians believed that body parts belonged to an albino person will bring wealth, or luck to a person. Therefore, people are willing to pay as much as US$3,000 or US$4,000 for a limb, or as much as US$75,000 for the 'full set', a whole body.
As a result, people with albinism in Tanzania are regularly attacked by people who wanted to sell their limbs off.
Albinism is a hereditary genetic condition that causes a total absence of pigmentation in the skin, hair and eyes. It affects one Tanzanian in 1,400 births, often caused by inbreeding in remote and rural communities.
Daily Mail reported that there have been 74 killings and 59 survivors of attacks. Even worse, 16 graves of the victims have been robbed.
Witch doctors believed that albino body parts are capable of bringing riches, power and success, if used in potions. United Nations report revealed that miners used bones belonging to an albino person as amulets, or would bury them where they are drilling for gold.
