TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Deputy Finance Minister Mardiasmo said that he was ready to take action against delinquent taxpayers. Currently, the Finance Ministry’s tax directorate general is striving to collect taxes by imposing gijzeling (the Dutch term for detention without trial) against nine delinquent taxpayers.
“Some of them owe hundreds of billions of rupiahs in taxes,” Mardiasmo said at his office on Tuesday, January 27, 2015.
Mardiasmo confirmed that a huge number of taxpayers were dodging taxes. He hopes that tax consultants could help the government educate their clients, particularly in the case of attempted tax evasion.
Mardiasmo added that of 23 million tax subjects, only 17 million individuals who are registered as taxpayers. Of the figure, only 10.8 million who submit the annual tax returns and only 1.7 million who actually pay taxes.
Finance Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro said that the government had set a target to achieve Rp1,300 trillion (US$108.3 billion) in tax revenue.
