TEMPO.CO, Surabaya - Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini said she would not send Indonesian migrant workers who lacked skills to work overseas. “I disagree, except they really have skills,” Risma told reporters in her office on Monday, January 26, 2015.
She said the Surabaya administration would step in on the sending of migrant workers abroad, among them by scrutinizing the contracts of both parties. The Surabaya government is presently training 50 people in nursing skills to care for senior citizens.
Risma said those who passed the training would be given opportunities to work at nursing homes in Japan. “We will control the contracts, so we know everything for sure,” Risma said.
The mayor said her administration was also training 48 people in the city, comprising high school and college graduates, in multiple sectors of the creative industry, including animation, software and cinematography.
The Surabaya administration is teaming with a group of renowned companies for the training, among them Daniswara, Google and Tokopedia. “The direction is toward the creative industry, it will be like Silicon Valley in the future,” she said.
