Jakarta BPBD to Update Water Level Every 30 Minutes

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Jakarta Deny Wahyu said that residents in flood-prone areas would receive an early warning every 30 minute if water levels at water gates rise.

Residents who will receive an early warning about water level, Deny said, are those living in Kelapa Gading and Penjaringan, North Jakarta, as well as in Kapuk and Duri Kepa, West Jakarta.

"If water level is at Alert 4 level, we will inform the residents every hour kami, however, if water level increases quickly, we will accordingly increase the frequency of the information we’re going to provide,” Deny said on Sunday, January 25, 2015.

According to Deny, by increasing the intensity of early warning about water level to the residents, it is hoped that residents can always monitor condition in their areas.

For the record, on Friday, January 23, 2015, a number of areas in North Jakarta including Kelapa Gading and Penjaringan, as well as several areas in West Jakarta including Kapuk and Duri Kepa were inundated by floodwater. In several locations, floodwaters even reached 1 meter.

To spread information about floods, the Jakarta administration also uses several media such as Twitter or sites such as siagabanjir.org or siagabanjir.org/peta.

Deny expressed his optimism that although areas such as Duri Kepa, Kapuk, Penjaringan, and Kelapa Gading experience rain all day long, those areas will not be vulnerable to floods as long as tides do not hit the areas.

"The most important thing is that the tide won’t hit the areas so that water can flow normally,” he said.
