TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dozens of academicians in Yogyakarta province on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at Gadjah Mada University gathered and issued a joint statement to support the anti-graft body Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
The academicians are from Gadja Mada University, Yogyakarta State University (UNY), Indonesia Islamic University (UII), Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University and Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University (UIN).
The academicians urged President Joko Widodo to immediately take actions to prevent efforts to weaken KPK.
UII Third Deputy Rector Abdul Jamil hoped that President Jokowi would not be influenced by the political parties supporting him in handling the case of weakening KPK.
"The President was voted for by the people, not by the political parties,” he said.
In the meantime, UMY rector Bambang Cipto highlighted the efforts to weaken KPK that emerged when Jokowi’s administration is not even one year. In such a situation, he said, Jokowi’s firm action in battling KPK is needed.
"We will continue garnering supports for KPK,” he added.
