TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Former Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) commissioner Erry Riana Hardjapamekas said the KPK must accelerate its investigation into the alleged bribery case implicating Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan.
“KPK must expedite the investigation so that it will be clearer who the suspect is,” said Erry on Thursday.
He said if Budi must be detained, KPK leaders must do so immediately so that the president can decide the next step.
Erry said he was upbeat the graft-buster would prioritize to complete the investigation into Budi's case. “Even without being ordered, the KPK has already prioritized this case because they know that this is not just a small case,” he said.
Commenting on the legal step taken by Budi Gunawan's lawyer in retaliation to the KPK's investigation, Erry said it was Budi's right. “He has all the rights to take legal action as long as they are in accordance with the procedure,” he said.
The KPK named Budi Gunawan as a graft suspect only days after President Joko Widodo announced Budi's sole nomination for the next top cop. The president later postponed Budi's ascension in light of strong public protests against the proposal of Budi's candidacy to the House of Representatives.
