TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government claimed that there are 10 million households still lacking access to electricity in Indonesia. The number was based on statistics - called the 'electrification rate' - gathered in 2014, which is only 84.12 percent.
"The lowest is in Papua, with only 43.17 percent [of households have access to electricity]. Because [Papua is wide]," said Director General of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Jarman.
Jarman said that in 2014, electrification rate has increased by 3.5 percent as a result of free-of-charge installation funded by the State Budget.
Moreover, the government's rural electricity program had also helped to increase access to electricity. In 2014, the government allocated Rp 2.3 trillion for the program. In 2015, the budget has been increased to Rp 2.5 trillion.
In addition, the National Electricity Masterplan has set a target 99 percent of electfication rate by the year 2020.
