TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- The Genesis Foundation, an NGO in Bengkulu, has uncovered new modus applied by poachers for illegally hunting rare Sumatran tiger (Phantera tigris Sumatrae). The modus involves the use of a device to electrify the tigers.
“Poachers have new method in hunting the tiger by using electrical shock,” said Barlian, the Director of Genesis Foundation in Bengkulu on Sunday, as quoted by Antara News.
The foundation, which run a program to monitor poaching and deforestation in the area of Kerinci Seblat National Park (TNKS) in Bengkulu have found the electrified wire in the Air Manjunto Limited Forest Production area.
“We have found a tapir and a bear caught on the electrical device,” Barlian added.
The wire is powered by a generator hidden in the settlement area adjacent to the forest. According to Barlian, the use of electrical device exposes highest risk both for animals and human.
The foundation have been regularly cleaning out the forest from the traps installed by the poachers. The numbers of traps found to be decreasing but poaching continues to happen.
