TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cellular operators are starting to increase the capacity of their services nearing the year-end holidays, although traffic increase is not expected to be as high as last Idul Fitri holiday.
To anticipate a jump in mobile traffic, XL Axiata service management director Ongki Kurniawan said the carrier will double its network the capacity and dispatch mobile base transceiver stations (mobile BTS).
XL predicted a 15-percent data traffic increase compared to normal days. Meanwhile, sms and voice traffic are predicted to rise by 10 percent and five percent, respectively.
Meanwhile, Telkomsel has identified 643 main points that will be packed with holidaying customers. In addition to relying on its 83,000 BTS, Telkomsel will dispatch 67 compact mobile base stations "so our customers will have no problems [in using our services]," vice president of corporate communications Adita Irawati said.
Another cellular operator, Indosat, predicted mobile traffic will reach its peak on December 31. Indosat estimated a data traffic increase of 40.89 percent, while sms and voice traffics are projected to rise by 12.76 percent and 5.13 percent.
