TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Djohermansyah Djohan, director general of regional autonomy at the Home Affairs Ministry, proposes simultaneous regional elections in 2016 to be held in August because August is the most proper time and inauguration can still be held in December.
“August is the right time with time calculation of election dispute time and second round two to four months,” said Djohermansyah on Tuesday.
He said inauguration must be held in December so that there will be no regional chiefs with reduced term of office. If regional elections are still held in 2015, inauguration will still be held in 2016, which will cause reduced term of office for regional chiefs when regional elections are simultaneous held in 2020.
Delayed regional election has more benefits. One of them is budget saving because there will be more regions that participate in regional elections. Thus, elections of governors and mayors or regents can be conducted at the same time. The General Elections Commission (KPU) will also be more prepared in conducting elections.
KPU chairman Husni Kamil Manik also agreed that regional elections in 2016 are more beneficial. The KPU can make better preparations for regional elections and budget efficiency per province can be achieved.
