TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria voted ahead of Barcelona starlet Lionel Messi and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero to win Argentina’s foreign-based player of the year. Di Maria was awarded with Olimpia de Plata on Tuesday, Argentina time.
The result is surprising because this becomes the first year of Lionel Messi losing the crown that he had been wearing since 2006. But the journalists, who participated in the vote, claimed they have their own particular reason why Di Maria rule this year.
Di Maria, 26, was part of the Argentina squad that reached the World Cup final in the summer, while he played a key role in helping former club Real Madrid finally claim La Decima -- their 10th European Cup -- last season. The Albiceleste international, who also picked up Copa del Rey and UEFA Super Cup winners' medals with Madrid in 2014, became the most expensive signing in British history when moving to United for an initial 59.7 million pounds in August.
Although Messi was there too fighting for Argentina in the 2014 World Cup, he is seen as failed to bring titles for his club Barcelona.
