TEMPO.CO, Berlin – German international Marco Reus has been given a €540,000 fine for driving without a license, the daily Bild reported Thursday.
"Today I know that I was too naive and that it was stupid,” the 25-year-old player said. “I have learned my lesson and this will not happen again.”
According to Bild, the fine is a record in Germany for such a violation.
The Borussia Dortmund player, who is currently absent due to a right ankle injury, was stopped by the police on March 18 while driving a luxury car as he returned from training.
He failed to show his license to the police, who later found out that he did not own one and he previously had been stopped five times between September 2011 and March 2014.
Each time Reus was given a ticket without anyone checking his license.
The fine was calculated in proportion to his revenue, which the court estimated at €180,000 a month.
Reus only played 11 matches this season but is predicted to return from injury in January.
