TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Islamic Defender Front (FPI) asserted that it will not carry out sweeps at shopping malls that feature Christmas decorations since they would not disrupt order among Muslims.
"We won't be a part of sweeps at shopping malls," FPI chairman Muchsin Alatas told Tempo on Friday, December 19, 2014.
Earlier, a new jihadist group called the Jamaah Ansharusy Syariah (JAS) announced that it would disseminate pamphlets stating bans on Christmas decorations for Muslims. JAS also bans Muslims from helping Christians preparing Christmas celebrations. They also called on business owners not to force their Muslim employees to wear Christmas accessories.
According to Muchsin, the FPI would not disrupt Christians in celebrating their holiday. However, he called on Christians to respect other religious groups.
Muchsin also called on shop owners and retailers not to ask Muslim employees to wear Christmas attributes, such as Santa Clause's hat, since the red cone-shaped hat is one of Christian symbols.
