Sofyan Djalil: Rupiah Bounces Back as Investors Return

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Coordinating Economic Minister Sofyan Djalil called on the public not to panic over the rupiah's weakening against the US dollar over the last few weeks. According to Sofyan, the rupiah is gaining since foreign investors were returning to Indonesia for investments.
“The rupiah is bouncing back and stabilizing. [The rupiah's weakening] was just a temporary condition,” Sofyan said on Thursday, December 18, 2014.
Sofyan explained that the rupiah's weakening was caused by unanticipated US economic growth as opposed to domestic economy problems. Investors, Sofyan said, were awaiting The Fed’s policy to increase its interest rate.
Sofyan said that Indonesia should not be concerned about the declining economy in Russia since the impact would be insignificant. According to Sofyan, ensuring the availability of basic needs, such as rice, for the people is the main priority.
