TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Human Rights Watch urged President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to cancel the execution of five drug convicts. Earlier this month, Jokowi has announced that he had approved court decision that impose death sentence against five inmates.
"President Jokowi needs to join the global trend that is against death sentence execution," said Deputy Director of Human Rights Watch Asia Phelim Kine. "Indonesia has to show leadership among Asian nations by stopping the barbaric practice forever."
Previously, Jokowi had denied the appeal from the inmates. Jokowi said that he approved the execution because he considered drug dealers as the destroyers of the country's future. "The death sentence can be a shock therapy for drug dealers," Jokowi said.
The Attorney General Office (AGO) said that there are 136 inmates currntly awaiting for execution. Sixty four of the total number of inmates were drug convicts, while two suspects were terrorists, and the rest were involved in murder and robbery.
