Govt Remains Committed to Solving Human Rights Cases

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, said the government remained committed to solving various, severe human rights violations in the past in an appropriate, dignified means. “We will do this for sure,” Tedjo told Tempo at the presidential office in Jakarta on Wednesday, December 17, 2014.

According to Tedjo, the steps taken to investigate the cases would hinge on the emergence of new facts, explaining that it was impossible for the government to solve the cases in the absence of new facts. “The government never closed any case, but please don’t present the same data,” he said.

He said the government’s commitment to cracking these cases would be based on two methods ordered by President Joko Widodo: through the formation of a truth and reconciliation commission and an ad hoc human rights court.

“These two steps will be taken,” the former Navy chief of staff said. “When the cases are completed, let’s reconcile. But if there are new facts, the cases will be solved in the court.”

Tedjo, however, was non-committal on the People’s Consultative Assembly’s (MPR) plans to facilitate the cases. “I haven’t talked to the MPR. But in principles, the government will solve the cases in a good and dignified way.”
