Indonesia's Emission Reduction Program Gets the Spotlight

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia promise to reduce carbon dioxide gas emission by 30 percent in 2020. The commitment was expressed in the 20th United Nations Framework Convention on CLimate Change and the 10th Kyoto Protocol in Pentagonito, San Borja, Lima, Peru, which was rolled from December 1 to 13.
Rachmat Witoelar, the Chairman of the Republic of Indonesia Delegation in the convention said that the country receives supports from the international world in its effor to tackle climate change impact. Rachmet claimed that Indonesia is currently ahead of other countries in handling deforestation.
Indonesia’s annual carbon dioxide emission reaches 670 tons, 70 percent of which is attributed by forestry sector.
“We put serious efforts in reducing the use of fossil fuels,” said Rachmat.
According yo Rachmat, Indonesia becomes a model for its success Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) program. One of the parameters, still according to Rachmat, is that Indonesia is considered successful in maintaining the diversity of the forest and the life inhabiting the forest.
REDD program, which was initiated by Indonesia in 2007 in Bali, is run in collaboration with Norway and Australia.
“Indonesia’s REDD structure is advanced. Now, many countries are implementing similar program,” said Rachmat.
