TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta – President Joko Widodo said he would not give clemency to 64 narcotics convicts on death row. The president reiterated his refusal was final.
“There’s no forgiveness for drug dealers,” Jokowi said before 300 academics and students of Gajah Mada University in Yogyakarta on Tuesday, December 9, 2014.
The former Solo mayor said the nation had seen a total of 4.5 million drug abusers, and that 1.2 million of them were critical and could not be rehabilitated. Some 40-50 people, the president continued, died everyday of narcotics.
Jokowi also said that some of the narcotics had been produced domestically and their distribution was controlled from behind the bars.
“The death penalty could serve as a shock therapy for drug dealers,” Jokowi said.
