TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Ternate issued a high tide alert on Northern Maluku waters on Sunday, December 7. This is due to the danger imposed by possible high tide that is predicted to reach 3 to 4 meters.
Sulimin, the Head of Meteorology Station Class I Baabullah Ternate, said that the highest tide will happen on Halmahera sea, Northern Water of Halmahera and northern Maluku sea. Even small boats are suggested not to sail in these waters.
“We have disseminate this call to harbor management and local government,” said Sulimin to Tempo on Sunday.
According to Sulimin, almost all regions on North Maluku waters have high tides. Only West and East part of Halmahera have lower tides up to 2.5 meters, which is still dangerous for seafaring.
In response to the warning, North Maluku Governor Abdul Gani said he would forbid sail when weather get worse to avoid incidents.
“I have instructed the Transportation Agency to monitor activities at the harbor. If there is bad weather, all seafaring activities for small ships will be prohibited,” Gani assured.
