TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States (US) Embassy in Ankara issued a warning on a possible extremist attack against Syrian opposition groups based in the southern Turkish town of Gaziantep. The warning was issued on Wednesday, December 3, 2014.
The Embassy stopped short of detailing the identity of the group who are allegedly targeting the opposition group backed by the West, although it did state that the group is comprised of exiled members of the Syrian opposition that has little to no influence over the rebels who are fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
"The US Embassy have received reports that extremist groups are possibly planning an attack on Syrian interim government's facilities," explained the statement, as reported by Reuters.
"We are issuing a warning for US citizens that the ordinarily stable area in Turkey's southeast may turn restive without any prior warning, and that US citizens are advised to avoid travelling into the region near Syria's border," said the statement.
It has been reported that the targeted group in question was formed by the Western-backed National Coalition, who supported the Syrian Revolution and created the Opposition Forces back in November 2013. The group is reported to have established a Headquarters in Gaziantep - a Turkish province near the border with Syria.
The organization was initially formed to provide additional support for rebel-held territories within Syria, but continuous in-fighting and conflict has reduced the group's influence in the rebels' ranks.
