RI Sends Peacekeepers to Sudan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police are sending 140 policemen from the Formed Police Unit VII to Darfur, Sudan, on Sunday. The police will be on peace keeping duties in Sudan. 

"The assignment will last for a year," said National Police chief General Sutarman.

Sutarman added the task force were sent to Sudan to help uphold order, as well as to protect United Nations personnel and facilities. "They will also protect civilians and conflict refugees," he said.

The 140 policemen comprise 100 tactical personnel, while the rest are of supporting units. "They were also trained in language skills, police techniques, and specific skills in accordance with their role," he said.

Indonesia has participated in sending peacekeeping personnel to Sudan since 2008. In total, there have been 1,513 personnel stationed in Sudan.
