TEMPO.CO, Maros – The Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) said that the Fisheries, Marine, and Livestock Department in Maros, Sulawesi, was slow in combating the spread of anthrax bacteria that has killed a number of cows in 12 districts. It is assumed that anthrax contaminated beef has already circulating freely in traditional markets.

"This is already an extraordinary event," HS Chaidir Sham, Maros DPRD speaker, said yesterday. He regretted how the Husbandry Department is nonchalant in addressing the spread of bacteria that can be transmitted to humans who eat infected meat.

He suspected anthrax-infected meat has entered a number of traditional restaurants, such as coto stalls. "It is fatal if consumed by humans. It could lead to death," he said urging the Husbandry Department to immediately form an anthrax outbreak response team.

Residents are also asked to report infected cattle. It is suspected that there are cattle owners who deliberately butchered their sick animals and sell the meat to traders at low prices.

Abdul Aziz, head of South Sulawesi's Animal Husbandry and Health Department, claimed he has not received reports about the circulation of anthrax-infection meat. According to Aziz, Maros is safe from anthrax. "But we are ready to support Maros."

Meanwhile, Maros' Livestock Department chief Ansarullah refused to provide comments. Met at the office of regent, Ansarullah dodged reporters, saying he needed to use the bathroom.

Jumadi, chief of Animal Health division, said the Department of Husbandry has a budget allocation of Rp50 million for the treatment of anthrax in the fiscal year 2014. The money is allotted for the purchase of vaccine serum and animal health appliances. But he said the budget is not disbursed yet.
