TEMPO.CO, Damasak - Boko has claimed to have taken over the city of Damasak on the border of neighboring Niger after bombing a market on Tuesday, November 25, 2014.
After the attack, Nigerian soldiers and hundreds of residents fled across the border to seek protection when the armed militants opened fire on traders.
"There is not a single male in Damasak. Boko Haram is in control because all males and soldiers have fled. No one expects women to fight them," said Maina Ma'aji Lawan, who represents northern Borno state in Nigeria’s Senate, as reported by News 24 on Wednesday.
Boko Haram has reportedly established their authority over Damasak. Usman Kalili, a local government official, said Boko Haram has captured more than two dozen towns in the states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.
Nigerian and civilian troops have previously re-taken four cities from Boko Haram, which are Chibok, Gombi, Pelia and Hong. The troops were attempting to free Maiduguri from the militants when the attack in Damasak occurred.
