Indonesian Worker Killed in Malaysian Coal Mine Explosion

TEMPO.CO, Kuala Lumpur - Three workers, one from Indonesia, were killed in a coal mine explosion in Pantu, Sri Aman, Malaysia, on Saturday, November 22, 2014.
The deceased workers were identified as Kurdianto (Indonesia), Pang Chung Hyok (North Korea), and Tun Tun Win (Myanmar). Deputy police Chief of Sri Aman Commissioner Mat Jusoh Mohammad, said to the local media that injured victims increased to 29 people, including nine from Indonesia, six from Myanmar, five from China, seven from North Korea and two from Bangladesh.
The injured victims were taken to Serawak General Hospital (HUS), Sri Aman Hospital, and a number of other places. "From this number, 11 of them are in critical condition," said a staff from HUS.
Ranger Moss, Chief of Sri Aman Fire and Rescue Department, said that the explosion occurred when a belt switch in the mine was activated and one extractor used for venting gases from the tunnel malfunctioned. The switch set off sparks and caused the explosion.
