TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia ranks 31st out of 162 nations in the Global Terrorism Index 2014 by the Institute of Economy and Peace (IEP), after previously ranked 25th in 2013. Nevertheless, terrorism cases in 2013 increased, both in the number of cases and casualty.
Throughout 2013, the index noted 22 cases in Indonesia with 20 casualties. Other South East Asia nations in the list are Philippine (9th), Thailand (10th), Myanmar (32nd), Malaysia (66th), and Vietnam (124th).
IEP, a Sydney based institute, claimed that generally, terrorism in remains a threat, with an increasing intensity and coverage. The report cites the total death of terrorism increased by 61 percent, compared to that of 2012. In total, there were 17,958 casualties, amid the emerging new groups such as the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and Boko Haram.
The list also put Iraq on top, with 2,492 attacks that killed 6,300 people. Following Iraq are Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Syria, with total casualties in all top-five nations reaching 14,722 people.
