TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of Student Executive Boards (BEM) have staged protests against fuel price hike starting from Tuesday, November 18, 2014. On Thursday, November 20, 2014, all BEMs across Indonesia are planning to launch a massive rally at the State Palace.
Moehamad Ivan Riansa, chairman of the Student Executive Board at the University of Indonesia (BEM UI), said the rally will involve not only BEMs across Indonesia, but also youth organizations (OKP) who reject fuel price hike.
“All BEMs in Indonesia, along with OKPs, will conduct a rally against fuel price hike. We will surround the [State] Palace,” Ivan told Tempo on Tuesday, November 18, 2014.
BEM UI will hold a consolidation meeting on Tuesday night to make decisions about the rally on Wednesday, November 19, 2014. Ivan said the plan to surround the State Palace has been finalized and coordinated with other organizations.
Ivan added that the focus of the rally is to push President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Vice President Jusuf “JK” Kalla to step down from their posts, since the decision did not involve other institutions, such as the House of Representatives.
