TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The farmers in Indonesia is benefited by the migration of flocks of eagles from North Asia to Indonesia. The migration season is peaking on between late October until early November.
The raptors migrate in search for warmer climate during these months as well as to find more food stocks. During its migration, they will have breaks in mountains where it is shady and more food.
There are 20 types of eagles migrate in total, including aza jerdon (aviceda jerdoni), black baza (aviceda leuphotes), paria eagle (milvus migrans) and the short-toed snake-eagle (circaetus gallicus).
“The northern regions are starting to have winter, it is getting hard for eagles to find food,” said eagle observer of Profauna, Made Astuti.
The migration route is through Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore-Riau Islands-Palembang-Lampung-Java, and to East Nusa Tenggara. The raptors will settle down for five months before soaring back to their place of origin.
The Ngalam Birdwatcher Community (Seriwang) has been observing the eagles since weeks ago. They have spotted hundred of raptors flying above Mt Banyak, Batu city, Malang.
“The observation was done two weeks ago,” said Seriwang activist Swastu Prawidya Mukti.
