Minister Susi to Take Action Against Illegal Fishing

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti, has stated that she will uphold assertive measures against boats from surrounding nations that alleged of illegally fishing in Indonesian waters. She believed that boycotting the nations can help stop illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities.

"If they do not want to follow the rules, they are not welcome here," said Susi. "I will do anything necessary to make sure that fishery in Indonesia remains sustainable."

Illegal fishing in Indonesia has cost the nation around Rp 100 trillion per year, 1,000 boats are estimated to be involved in illegal fishing every year.

In order to tackle illegal fishing, Minister Susi has listed the help of the Indonesian Naval Army and the Police. She also said that the government will issue a regulation on fishing. "Be it legal or illegal, if the practice is not right, it should be managed," she said.
