TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The National Police said they would continue investigating the country’s online gambling network and resolve cases pertaining to it.
“This will certainly continue. This is our duty,” National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar told Tempo on Wednesday, October 29, 2014.
North Jakarta Court sentenced Monday eight defendants in an online gambling case. Three were sentenced to four months behind bars and the other five to one month and 20 days’ imprisonment.
When asked about the relatively light penalties, Boy said they were the authority of the judges. “Don’t ask me, ask the judges.”
The police nabbed the eight in May after the end of a 2014 Champions League match, discovering cash involved in the gambling operations at around Rp400 billion.
It was also found the gambling syndicate had gone international with a web hosting registered in the Philippines.
According to Article 27 of the Electronic Transaction Information Law, the maximum penalty for gambling cases is six years in prison and a fine of Rp1 billion.
