TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- An Indonesian student Nixon Widjaja grabbed the gold medal in the 11th International Mathematics and Science Olympic (IMSO), held in Bali on October 5 to 11, 2014.
Nixon - a student of IPEKA Sunter 1 Elementary School Jakarta - beat 233 other students from Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philipppines, Brunei, India, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan, Nepal, South Africa, and Vietnam.
The International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) is a science competition initiated by the Indonesian Ministry of Education. It is formerly known as ASEAN Mathematics and Science Olympiad (AMSO) but was changed after welcoming interests from non-ASEAN countries.
Nixon obtained the highest score in the Best Theory category.
"I had some difficulties in interpreting the questions since they were in English, while I speak Indonesian daily. However, after about five weeks of preparation and assistance from my teachers in IPEKA, I went through the difficulties," said Nixon.
