TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Marine and Fisheries Agency of Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta, is on their way to finishing up the survey on areas proposed to be the location of turtle conservation areas. The survey will be completed on November 2014, at the latest.
"We recommend 10 spots out of 35 locations on the beaches to be opened special interest destination and turtle conservation area, instead of general public tourism destination," said Head of Gunungkidul Marine and Fisheries Agency Agus Supriyanto to Tempo, on Thursday, October 23, 2014.
Ten beaches recommended for turtles landing sites are Seruni Beach, Daud, Sangen, Watunene, Mitun, Greneng, Segaran, Porok, and Krokoh Beach. The proposal of establishment will be submitted to the regent in the end of October.
Survey on the turtle landing behavior done by the government on August to September shows that at least five types of sea turtles are found to lay egg on the coastline of Gunungkidul. The five types are, among others, Leatherback Sea Turtle, Green Sea Turtle, Flatback Sea Turtle, and Loggerhead Turtle.
The conservation step is taken to protect the turtles habitation since it has a role in maintaining the natural ecosystem balance.
