TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - One of Indonesian most renowned entrepreneurs, Rahmat Gobel, is reportedly the industry minister candidate in Joko “Jokowi” Widodo-Jusuf “JK” Kalla’s cabinet.
Rahmat is the second generation of the Gobel family who owns the national electronic giant Panasonic Gobel Group. Born in an entrepreneur family, Rahmat had been educated since young age to inherit and lead the Gobel family business, founded by his father H. Thayeb Mohammad Gobel.
Rahmat Gobel is also actively promoting cooperatives, small and medium enterprises and was given an award by the Indonesian Department of Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises in 1997.
In 2002, the Indonesian Trade and Industry Chamber (Kadin Indonesia) chairman Aburizal Bakrie trusted Rahmat Gobel to head Kadin Indonesia’s metal, machinery, chemical and electronic industries.
In addition, since 1999, Rahmat has been actively participated in a business owners association, serving as the general chairman of the Indonesian Electronic Industries Association (GABEL) from 1999 to 2003. From 2010, he has been serving as the chairman of the Electronic and Telematics-Based industries Association (F-GABEL).
