TEMPO.CO, Washington – North Korea has freed one Jeffrey Fowle, one of the three Americans detained by the country. He is now being flown home to his hometown in Ohio.
"While this is a positive decision ... we remain focused on the continued detention of Kenneth Bae and Matthew Miller and again call on the DPRK to immediately release them," said White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest as reported by Reuters on Tuesday.
Earnest declined to comment on the way to negotiate with North Korea, but said the US government would keep trying to free the other two Americans: Kenneth Bae and Matthew Miller.
Fowle is a street repair worker from Miamisburg, Ohio. He came to North Korea last May as a tourist. He was detained for leaving a Bible at a sailor’s club in the North Korean city of Chongjin.
Miller was arrested in April for a separate incident. Bae, a Korean-American missionary, was sentenced to 15 years' hard labor.
It is not yet clear why North Korea freed Fowle, but the release might signal a warming diplomatic relations between North Korea and the US.
