TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA) chairman Arist Merdeka Sirait said the number of children who became sexual offenders increased by 10 percent in 2014. “This is shocking. In 2013, from 3,339 cases, there were only 16 percent of cases with children as sexual abusers,” Arist told Tempo on Tuesday.
He continued that from early 2014 to September 2014, children who committed sexual offenses reached 26 percent. “That’s from 2,826 cases of violence towards children reported to us,” he said.
From the reported 2,826 cases, around 56 percent of which are of sexual abuse. Jakarta tops the list on crimes towards children with 814 cases.
“Based on the cases reported around Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek), Jakarta has the highest number. From 824 cases, 54 percent of which are sexual crimes,” he said.
Arist said around half of the 824 cases occurred in East Jakarta, which recorded 415 cases. “North Jakarta ranks the second, followed by West Jakarta, South Jakarta and Central Jakarta,” he said.
In order to tackle sexual violence towards children, the Komnas PA, the ministry and the Jakarta government will create a national movement against sexual violence against children on November 2. “Why we make it in Jakarta because Jakarta has the highest number of sexual violence cases and also the highest population,” said Arist.
