TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) at Kupang's Lasiana Class II Climatology Station, Juli Setiyanto, said that the drought in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province is expected to last until the end of November 2014.
"The current dry season is not extraordinary, and the monsoon season is expected to arrive by mid or late November," said Juli Setiyanto in Kupang on Tuesday, referring to the drought that has scorched NTT in the past couple of months and caused a shortage of clean water for a majority of the residents in the isles.
According to Juli, this year's dry season is normal - but the arid conditions are exacerbated by the prevalence of dry southeasterly winds, which pushes rainfall away from the mainlands.
"Our latest satellite imagery showed that rain clouds have begun to form, but the dry southeasterly winds are expected to delay rainfalls to around mid or late November," said Juli, who also said that rain have been observed in some areas such as Baun, Kupang Regency, Ngada and South Central Timor.
