Hong Kong Officials to Meet Student Protesters for Talks

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hong Kong government officials will finally meet student leaders of the protest in Hong Kong on Tuesday. The protest has been ongoing for more than three weeks.
As reported by Reuters, this is the first meeting after previous planned meetings were canceled. Hong Kong chief executive Leung Chun-ying will not take part in the talks and only send five envoys including Hong Kong’s number two official, Chief Secretary Carrie Lam.
Some Hong Kong political experts hoped the dialogue would yield an agreement though it is unlikely to bridge the chasm between both sides or end the demonstration.
The talks will be broadcast live at the insistence of student leaders to make it public. A large screen will be set up in protest zones for the demonstrators to see.
Situation in Hong Kong has intensified since early October after tens of thousands of protesters took the streets demanding China to give full democracy in Hong Kong to directly elect Hong Kong leaders in the 2017 elections.
