Jakarta-Bekasi Toll Road Construction to Resume

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The construction of the Bekasi-Cawang-Kampung Melayu (Becakayu) Tollway is set to resume after having been suspended since 1998. The beginning of the resumption was launched by the Minister of Public Works Djoko Kirmanto at Jalan Raya Kalimalang in East Jakarta on Friday, October 17, 2014.

Djoko said that although the project is economically sound, the contractors did not have sufficient funds to go ahead with the project. As such, the government has decided to support the project by assisting in the land acquisition process for Section I and II of the tollway. "The value of the state's contribution amounts to Rp350 billion," said Djoko in a written statement.

The Becakayu Tollway will be divided into two sections - Section I stretches for 11 kilometers between Kasablanka and Jaka Sampurna, while Section II stretches for 10.4 kilometers between Jaka Sampurna and Duren Jaya. The entity that has been appointed to manage the Rp7.2 trillion toll road project is PT Kresna Kusuma Dyandra Marga.

PT Kresna Kusuma Dyandra Marga signed the Tollway Management Agreement (PPJT) on December 16, 2011, which grants it the right to manage the construction and operation of both sections of the tollway for 45 years.

The tollway is hoped to help with congestion around the Jabodetabek region - especially around Jl. Raya Kalimalang. Djoko has called on the Governor of Jakarta, as well as the Governor of West Java to support the construction of the tollway by providing more assistance in the land acquisition process.
