TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director General of Social Rehabilitation of Social Ministry Syamsudin said that Jakarta is in need of a lot of shelters to facilitate treatments for people with mental disorders (OMDK).
The growing number of persons with mental disorders in the capital city has made the existing social institutions no longer be able to accommodate them.
"We need more shelters," said Syamsudin.
Syamsudin explained that 11.2 percent out of almost 10 million people in Jakarta are having mental disorders. It equals to one people every 10 residents of the capital are mentally unhealthy.
The shelters are used to reduce the burden of mental hospitals and social institutions. Syamsudin said that his side will engage private sector to provide more shelters with the Ministry of Social Affair as the initiator partner for two years. After that, the shelter will be managed independently by the Social Service.
