APPSI Asks Jokowi to Revitalize Traditional Markets

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ngadiran, the secretary general of the Indonesian Traditional Market Traders (APPSI), asked president-elect Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo to immediately issue a presidential regulation on traditional market building rights, organization and management.

Ngadiran believes the new regulation would protect traders to run their business in a long run. Currently, traders' rights to use the traditional markets are still governed by the Presidential Regulation Number 112 of 2007 on traditional and modern markets organization and management issued by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and other regional regulations issued by respective regional heads.

The presidential regulation only regulates market operational hours and traders' placement in the market, while the regional regulations only provide traders with the rights to use the market for 20 years.

The APPSI hopes that the next government would provide traders with better facilities.

"We're asking [the government] to refer to the agrarian law and low cost apartment law to provide at least 35 years or even more," Ngadiran said.

Additionally, the new regulation can also revitalize about 5,000 traditional markets within the next five years as planned by Jokowi. Ngadiran added that with the policy, the economy in every region will continue to thrive. "Prepare the regulation now to protect investment in in regions."
