TEMPO.CO, Surabaya - Surabaya zoo has new member as one of its anoas (Anoa deprecicornis) gave birth to a baby anoa on Wednesday, October 15. According to Surabaya Zoo Public Relation Officer, Agus Supangkat, the baby was born through a natural process.
The baby of the Sulawesi endemic fauna was born of 10-year-old parents Wendy and Bobby that arrived from Sulawesi in March 2006. The anoa's parents had previously given birth to three anoas aged six, five and two years old.
Surabaya zoo now has six anoas consisting of two males, three females, and a baby whose sex has yet identified. An anoa generally has a size of 150-centimeter length, 85-centimeter height, and 300-kilogram weight. The adults have straight backward antler up to 40 centimeters long.
Female anoa carries the baby for 9 to 10 months before giving birth. This rare animal can only live up to 30 years.
