Demands for Indonesian Skilled Workers on the Rise

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia has thus far been sending many workers in various fields overseas. Among them in the construction and oil and gas sectors, which generate the most foreign exchange.
"One person in that sector can generate US$7-14,000 per year,” said Anjar Prihantono, the promotion director at the Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI) on Monday.
Anjar said demands for professional migrant workers were growing albeit unskilled domestic workers were more exposed. “Our unskilled workers in Malaysia are only a few. Many senior positions in Malaysia are actually taken by Indonesians,” he said.
He continued that he still received global demands for skilled workers from Indonesia. At the Trade Expo Indonesia last week, for example, several countries filed demands for migrant workers up to 11,800, rocketing from 4,700 workers last year. “Those demands are dominated by the hospitality and construction sectors,” he said.
Anjar hoped that the service sector would develop further and the workers who had returned to Indonesia could develop businesses in regions. “I hope after they are successful they can return to Indonesia and develop their regions through creative and other industries,” he said.
