TEMPO.CO, Tangerang – Swedish furniture retailer IKEA will launch its first store in Indonesia on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. “It’s a moment for soft opening,” said IKEA Indonesia general manager Mark Magee in a press conference at IKEA Indonesia Alam Sutera Store, Tangerang, on Monday.
According to Magee, IKEA opted to enter Indonesia in light of the country's rapid economic growth in the last decade. He added Alam Sutera area was chosen as it was strategically located near settlements and boasted a large area.
Magee said IKEA would only focus on one store and had no plans yet to open another. Magee, however, stopped short of detailing its investment value.
In Indonesia, IKEA eyes one third of the total 28 million population in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi. Magee also said the people in Indonesia were already familiar with IKEA products. “Our products have been present in Indonesia for 22 years through IKEA trading,” said Mark.
