TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Research and Technology minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta said that nuclear power plant development in Indonesia is facing obstacles including from the mafia who are taking advantages of fuel utilization for electricity.
“Everyone knows that some people are benefited from oil-fueled power plants,” Gusti said on Saturday, October 11, 2014.
According to Gusti, those people will do anything to make sure that high technology projects, such as nuclear power plant, will fail, by persuading public to reject such projects.
“They always say nuclear pose the danger of radiation,” Gusti said.
However, Gusti guaranteed that Indonesia has qualified manpower in dealing with nuclear technology. Moreover, Gusti said, the Research and Technology Ministry has conducted a study that Bangka Island is a safe place for a nuclear power plant site.
“The island is free of earthquake and tsunami,” Gusti said.
Gusti explained that the results of the study have been submitted to the Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry and the State Electricity Company (PLN). Gusti hopes that the new government will have the political will to develop nuclear power plant and ensure Indonesia to be free of energy crisis.
