TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Home Affairs Ministry is ready to implement e-voting for regional elections. "We are technologically capable. We can also work with the BPPT," said Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi today.

The ministry, he said, has conducted trials in 10 villages and they all went well. The region that can conduct e-voting is the one whose populations already have e-ID.

Data recording must keep proceeding. "We always update every six months." However, he said that not everyone wanted to process their e-ID since they were "too lazy".

According to the irector general of demographic and civil registry at the Home Affairs Ministry, Irman, voters are ready for e-voting. “We only have to adjust with the General Election Commission (KPU)."

KPU member Hadar Nafis Gumay said in 2015 regional election, e-voting might be possible, as regulated in the regulation in lieu of law for the regional election law. The KPU would first study which regions are ready for e-voting. Regions with good infrastructure may be able to implement the system.

Some changes must be made to adjust with e-voting, such as the reduced polling stations and no more recruitment for election committees.

However, what matters most is that KPU can guarantee that such system can be trusted by the public, in order to avoid problems in the future.
