TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has been ranked the tenth busiest airport in the world by the Airports Council International (ACI), in a report which focuses on air travel throughout 2013.
Indonesia was ranked ninth by ACI in a similar study in 2012 - although the actual numbers of passengers that went through the Soekarno Hatta Airport actually increased by 4.1 percent between 2012-2013, which brings the annual total to 60,137,347 passengers.
Soekarno Hatta Airport is also named by ACI as the busiest airport in Southeast Asia - it is ranked fourth busiest in Asia, behind Beijing, Tokyo, and Dubai's airports.
Indonesia's drop in rankings is caused by the fact that Dubai's international airport went up from tenth place in 2012 straight to the seventh place in 2013 - surpassing Paris, Dallas, and Jakarta in one go.
The 'busiest airport in the world' title in 2013 goes to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in the United States, although it experienced a decline in annual passenger traffic by 1.1 percent - down to 94,4 million people. Beijing's Capital Airport won second honours, as 83,7 million passengers went through the airport in 2013 - up 2.2 percent from the year before.
Third, there is London's Heathrow Airport which was passed by 72,4 million people in 2013, up by 3.3 percent from 2012, followed by Tokyo's Haneda Airport, O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
Dubai's International Airport went up three place to claim seventh place - it experienced a 15 percent jump in passenger traffic to 66,4 million passengers passing through it in 2013.
Paris and Dallas took eighth and ninth place, before it is joined by Jakarta in tenth place.
