National Gallery Hosts Contemporary Ceramic Exhibition

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A contemporary ceramic art exhibition entitled The Third Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale (JCCB#3) will be held in National Gallery, Central Jakarta, starting from September 23 to October 13. As many as 72 participants are set to show off their ceramic works including 42 Indonesian artists and 30 foreign artists.
Ahman Sya, the Director General of the Art and Culture Based Creative Economy Unit of the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry, said that contemporary ceramic art have to accommodate heritage and tradition of the past. Yet, on the other hand, the artists cannot be separated from the influence of an avant-garde contemporary visual art.
According to Ahman, Asian ceramic arts have been recognized by international world especially in Taiwan and Korea. The interaction between ceramic artists is getting intense as the information and communication are easier to do. This helps artists to understand more about the current visual art position in local, regional or international context.
Curator Asmudjo J. Irianto and Rifky Effendi promised a different package of the biennale. Differently from the previous events, the works will be classified into four sections: art, design, craft, and tradition.
The event will also features international seminar and symposium, workshop, and artists talk. International artists are coming from United States, Canada, Wales, Argentina, Australia, Netherlands, Romania, Norway, Switzerland, Slovenia, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Korea, Taiwan, China, and India.
Indonesia will be represented by ceramic arts from Bali, Yogyakarta, Jatiwangi, Majalengka, Bandung, and Bayat in Klaten.
“In addition, (Indonesia) will present ceramics from Ciruas, Serang which is not widely exposed but has a strong tradition character that many of the craftsmen are brought to Bali,” said Asmudjo.
