Freeport Still Operating despite Mine Collapse

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director General for Mineral and Coal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, R. Sukhyar, ensured that PT Freeport Indonesia remains operating in production, despite the incident of collapsing mine two weeks ago. "Production is not interferd, as the collapsed mine was at a newly developed area," said Sukhyar.
Sukhyar said that the collapsed mine was at West Muck Bay area, under the Grasberg Block Cave. The area was only recently developed and yet from producing.
Previously on Friday September 12, the mine collapsed due to ground failure, killing mine operator Boby Hermawan. In regards to the incident, CEO of PT Freeport Indonesia Rozik B. Sutjipto said that he has reported the incident to the ministry. "The ministry will later follow up our report," he said.
